Nguyen Thanh Tuan, deputy director of the Department of Industry and Trade said that Phu Yen attracted 26 solar power and wind farm projects with the total capacity of 1,960MW. Five of these projects came into operation and the remaining ones are either in construction or waiting to be added to the power development planning. In addition, 15 other projects with the total capacity of 1,147MW are conducting pre-feasibility studies.

“The problem is that the existing grid can only handle 443MW. Meanwhile, the excess capacity to be accommodated is is 2,699 MW. Thus, the existing power grid will not be able to handle the above renewable energy projects come into operation,” Tuan said.

The renewable energy sector is one of Phu Yen’s attractive sectors, which plays a crucial role in improving socioeconomic development.

At present, Hoa Hoi plant is the largest renewable energy plant in Phu Yen and the central region of Vietnam, according to chairman of the board of directors of Phu Yen TTP JSC Dang Trung Kien.

The plant uses 752,640 PV panels to directly convert sunlight into electrical energy.

The plant began commercial operation on June 10, 2019. This is also a major project to mark the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of Phu Yen province.

Developing power grids is a part of Phu Yen’s socioeconomic development plan for 2021-2025. Under the plan, next year, the province targets to reach $210 million in export turnover and VND8.63 trillion ($375.22 million) in the province’s budget. In addition, the province expects to complete 71 per cent of the new rural development programme and generate 25,000 jobs for local people, along with increasing forest coverage to 46 per cent.
